New year, new you: safety resolutions for 2024

What better time than the start of a new year to reflect on how you can improve your safety? Read our suggestions for safety resolutions that you can implement for 2024 and beyond!

The start of a new year is the perfect time to take a step back, reflect, and think about what resolutions might be worth implementing into your life to kickstart 2024. Of course, there are the classic, tried and true resolutions that you can re-prioritize in the new year, i.e., to eat healthier, drink more water, travel more, get organized, etc., and these are all great resolutions to put into practice. But don’t forget to think about a critical area of your life that allows you to thrive, learn, and grow in all other areas: safety and security. This year, at Wear Opal, we want to suggest a few safety resolutions to help you stay safe and sound throughout 2024 and beyond:

Resolution 1: Reflect on Last Year's Safety Practices:

As we all know, the best way to make a smart change in the future is to take a close look at the past. Take a moment to think back on what you did to stay safe last year. Did you have a safety plan? Did you consistently follow that plan? What worked well? What could be better? This year, start simple: celebrate the safety practices that served you well last year and think about what could be improved in 2024. Learning from your past experiences is a crucial step towards a safer future.

Resolution 2: Upgrade Your Safety Wardrobe:

As you think about the changes you want to make to your 2024 style, don’t forget about safety! Consider upgrading your safety wardrobe with essentials like reflective gear, durable footwear, layers for all types of weather, and even safety wearables with location-sharing and emergency alert functionalities, like the Wear Opal ring. Investing in quality safety gear ensures you're prepared for any situation, whether you're commuting, exercising, or traveling to a new place.

Resolution 3: Emergency Preparedness:

Stay safe in 2024 by making sure you are prepared for the unexpected. Ensure you have a well-stocked emergency kit at home and in your car. The National Weather Service recommends including the following in a basic emergency kit: bottled water, non-perishable food, a flashlight with extra batteries, first aid supplies like bandaids and disinfectant wipes, tissues, toilet paper, a sleeping bag or warm blanket, a wrench, personal hygiene items like deodorant, cotton swabs, and a whistle to signal for help. Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and evacuation routes in your home and where you work. Make sure to carry basic safety supplies with you in a purse or backpack. Being prepared for emergency circumstances can make a significant difference in your safety.

Resolution 4: Prioritize Mental Health:

Safety isn't just about physical well-being—it is also about improving your mental health. In 2024, prioritize self-care and stress management. Write down the activities that make you feel centered, and make sure that you are actively integrating them into your daily routine. Pick a time every day or a few times a week and plan activities that will help you manage your stress and give you energy, whether it is meditation or mindfulness practices, therapy, exercise, talking with family or friends or just taking a break. Prioritizing these activities will improve your overall sense of safety and well-being in 2024 and beyond.

Resolution 5: Practice Digital Safety:

In an increasingly digital world, online safety is just as important as physical and mental safety. Review your online habits and update passwords regularly. Avoid storing your user names and passwords in easily accessible places. Be cautious about sharing personal information online and educate yourself on how to avoid cybersecurity threats, like phishing emails. Stay informed to protect your identity and sensitive data.

Resolution 6: Share Your Safety Plan with Family and Friends:

Finally, make sure to share your safety plans with family, friends, and loved ones. By openly discussing your safety resolutions, you not only make a verbal commitment to your plans, but you also foster a culture of safety within your close circle. This approach will improve your accountability to your safety plans and significantly increase the likelihood that you follow through on your safety resolutions. Also, it will allow you to get perspective on safety measures that have worked well for your family and friends that you can consider implementing into your life!
